the most disturbing pick-up line. Ever.

My friend Milo is hairy, cantankerous, and single. If he keeps using pick-up lines like this one from a couple years ago, he will stay that way.

Milo to Girl: Hey, do you have a tattoo?

Girl to Milo: Uh, no...why?

Milo to girl: Huh, that's weird...you do when I draw you.

God I love that guy.

Changing of the Nannies

For those of you who aren't aware, Allie has had a nanny on the days that I work since she was 4 months old. We had a great deal of anxiety about leaving her with anyone once I was due to return to work, (we weighed the cost of flying the grandmothers in every week to sit...needless to say, it was more than a little expensive) but all that changed when we met Audrey. What a charming, sweet, kind, compassionate person we found in this young woman! All the traits you want in a person caring for your kids; fun, great sense of humor, patient, and just (not to mention that she sang to Allie all the time!). Allie absolutely adores her.

You can imagine the sinking feeling I had when I heard St. Audrey (the patron saint of teething babies) sing for the first time. (Audrey moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music) Her voice was amazing. I knew if we got 6 months out of her before she got snatched up by a band or a label, we'd be lucky. We got pretty lucky; 9 months later and the strong call of her muse and God (Audrey would argue they are one in the same) changed her path with a string of really valuable chances to practice her craft full-time.

We were heartsick with the news. Now what do we do? The idea of having to try and find someone else to fill that place in Allie's days made me a little sad for her.

Into the picture comes Audrey's roommate, Laura. How we have gotten so lucky twice is beyond me. Audrey recommended her, and I knew as soon as I spent about 3 minutes with her during her interview that she would be great. She came for an orientation with Audrey the other day, and had her first day on her own with Allie yesterday. Allie cheerily chattered away in baby-speak as Laura attentively listened and played with her on the living room floor. Allie enjoyed her so much yesterday, that when Laura left, Allie cried!

Audrey will be stopping by from time to time and occasionally will watch Allie when she is in town. It all seems to have worked out for the best.

Good luck and love to Audrey, and Welcome Laura!!!

Allie vs the Roomba

This is the story of Allie and her estranged relationship with our Roomba.

For those unaware, a Roomba is a robotic vacuum cleaner. You just push a button, it plays a quick little tune (Da Da Da Daaaaa Da Da...those at home now yell, "Charge!!!!" for full effect), and then vacuums the room for you. It bumps into things and changes direction, and even puts itself back into the charging dock when it is done. It really is kinda nifty.

Allie is very busy. Allie is also exceedingly curious (much to the delight of her parents). I often pull Allie out from under the dining room table (where the Roomba lives) to prevent her from chewing on table legs and/or wreaking general havoc in a place where I cannot reach her.

One day she got away from me and of course made a bee-line for under the table. I was in the process of picking up a toy when from the other end of the room I hear, "Da Da Da Daaaa Da Da...EEEEEKKKKKKK!!!!!!" The Roomba rolls off the dock and spins in a circle. "AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" Says Allie, sure that the Roomba is going to get her.

"Rrrrrrrrr" the Roomba sets off on its task. "EEEEEEKKKKKKKK!!!!" screams Allie and she shoots out from under the table faster than I even knew she was able to crawl, "EEEEEKKKKK!!!!" as she crawls toward me, eyes wide and mouth in a grimace.

I laughed so hard a thought I might pee my pants (as many moms know, a greater possibility after having children.) and I promised Allie that I would pay for therapy if my laughing has scarred her in any way.

Hindi for, "Allie vs the Roomba" (in case you were wondering)

For some unknown reason, the preceeding blog posted in Hindi...changed the settings so now all my English-literate friends can enjoy the blog too.

Here we go again....

Well, I am finally getting around to this. I was going to do it during nursing school...then when I became a nurse...when I got pregnant...when Allie was born.... I am pregnant with our second child (Due 2/12/08) and done postponing the fearsome, intimidating, inevitable...Family Blog.
Not that it is all I will post: I do still talk and think about things that do not involve being a wife, mom, daughter, or friend. but for this post, I am predominately "Baba". (Yeah, I know.)

So Allie is now ten and a half months, and I will be 14 weeks pregnant tomorrow. (For those playing the home edition, that means Allie was 7 months when we found out I was pregnant, and she will be a seventeen month-old biped by the time the second one gets here.) Allie is a very busy and curious baby closing in on Toddlerhood waaaaaaaay too fast for me. There is nothing quite like spending time around a happy, fearless kid- (well, fearless save for her nemesis, The Roomba) she keeps me on my toes. My friend Sterling Jenkins had a great nickname growing up; his parents called him "Buzzy Buzz" because he was as busy as a bee. I think I will have to steal this one for Allie.
Random Allie info: Three teeth with another on the way. Loves all foods except baby food (faves are yogurt, ravioli, edamame, Indian, and Ethiopian- I am not making this up). "Mama" comes out "Baba", which I suppose could mean one of several things: she's confusing me with a Sumerian Goddess (even though I don't think I look like a dog), she thinks we are Chinese and I am her father, or that the ability to use any nasal tones in her pronunciation isn't quite there yet. (while the first two reasons are more entertaining, I think that it is most likely the last in the list.)
I have hit the tired wall and am bringing this post to a screeching halt...more soon.
